Founded by Robert Parker jr. who was a successful attorney discovered his love for wine and wanted to write and publish a magazine for the consumer on good wine. All of his friends told him that writing about wine wasn't profitable but Nevertheless, by 1978, the concept of a wine publication was formulated. The first issue of The Wine Advocate, a complimentary issue, was sent out to mailing lists purchased from several major wine retailers. The initial number of charter subscribers in August, 1978, was less than 600.
Twenty-eight years later, The Wine Advocate has over 50,000 subscribers, in every state in the United States, and in over 37 foreign countries. Today, virtually every knowledgeable observer agrees that The Wine Advocate exerts the most significant influence on the serious wine consumer’s buying habits and trends not only in America, but in France, England, Switzerland, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, and China.

"Wine & Spirits is doing a great job educating people about wine; something I know about. It helps both the trade and the consumer to make informed decisions—I think it's a must for distributors, retailers, restaurateurs and anyone interested in wine." "The feature articles have more depth than perhaps anything being published about wine in America these days. W&S is doing crucial work on the big, slow story of wine. They are sometimes quirky, often fearless, and always important. We need them more than we know." "Wine & Spirits covers what you want to know about wine and distills it perfectly. Most important to me is that every issue is food friendly..."
